The primary role of the Task Force on Youth and Workplace Wellness is to focus California’s legislators on the issues of nutritional health and physical fitness and to promote smarter state and local policies to address the state’s growing obesity epidemic.
In order to elevate nutritional health and physical fitness on legislators’ agendas, the Task Force provides three functions: legislator education, statewide speakers bureaus, and grassroots advocacy. In coordination with other public health advocacy organizations and collaboratives, such as the Strategic Alliance and Center for Public Health Advocacy, the Task Force is leading three projects to promote healthier legislation for nutrition and physical fitness access and education:
- Educate state and local lawmakers regarding critical child and adult obesity issues, including current research, data, and local and state initiatives;
- Build support for state legislation that seeks to provide better access and education for nutritional health and physical fitness through expert testimony, research, and grassroots advocacy;
- Educate the child and adult nutrition and physical fitness fields regarding pending legislation and issues effecting nutritional health through a statewide grassroots advocacy alert system.
In addition to the Task Force’s primary focus on policy, there are a number of events, challenges, initiatives and ‘best practices’ that the Task Force on Youth and Workplace Wellness is highlighting and leading, including Fitness Month, the Fit Business Challenge, and the Superintendents’ Challenge.
